The Scriptures today tell us that we are nothing. But God still loves us and calls us to be his people. We also will be tempted but Jesus will help us to overcome our temptations.

The first Reading reminds the Hebrews that they were nothing. God heard their prayers and supplications and entered into a holy covenant with them. This Reading is their instructions of what to do before the Lord in thankfulness and faith.

The second Reading assures us that we do not need to worry. Whatever our sins and weaknesses, confess and turn to Jesus. Have hope, turn back to the Lord and be saved.

Our Gospel is always the same for the First Sunday of Lent – the three temptations of Jesus.
1. Bread to stone – use your power for yourself. Take care of “number one.”
2. Compromise – get along in this world. Sacrifice your values to be recognized.
3. Do the spectacular – compel people to believe. Jesus however wants our free faith, our free love. Serve the Lord alone and trust in Him.

Our temptations will be different and particular to ourselves, but be constantly on guard. Reflect on your Baptism where we renounced sin, Satan, and all his works. Renew your own Baptismal vows during this Lenten season.
